Who Knew?

Edward Hyde, Governor of New York and New Jersey between 1701 and 1708, took his duties representing Queen Anne rather literally; he liked to appear in a hooped dress with an elaborate head-piece and fan. This, together with his habit of taking bribes, meant he wasn't terribly popular in Colonial-era New York.
