Who Knew?
The name Singapore was derived from the Sanskrit word Sinhapura, meaning Lion City. Singapore was so named because Sang Nila Utama, who founded the country, thought he saw a lion when he arrived on what is now Singapore island. However recent studies suggest that lions would never have lived on the island, and it was more likely to have been a tiger. Oops!
